those cuts because he supports the ryan budget. on social security, why don't you pott point out -- point out the republican party wants to privatize it. i wanted to be the head coach speaking into president obama's ear. i read the transcript. the transcript is factually the president will be fine there. you know, it looked like he was not prepared for mitt romney etch-a-sketching his way out of this debate. that's really what mitt romney did. he grabbed his etch-a-sketch we've been waiting for it. he literally became a totally different politician with different views. his $5 trillion tax plan, you know he said only embrace teachers. he talked about how regulation was essential. these are all views and positions that romney has never supported over the course of the 18 months. i think that was really surprising and i think that actually shook the president a bit and he didn't really know how to deal with it. is the president just going to sit over there and call romney a liar? that's not necessarily helpful.

a sense, a rising sense that the appointment of paul ryan as the vp pick has turned out to be a big mistake, that he should have chosen -- i had nate silver on last night who had wonderful facts and figures but said he had gone with marco rubio or something and gone for the latino vote, that could have been a demographic he could have pulled in he didn't otherwise have. with paul ryan, it just doesn't seem to be working. he brought him in to win the battle over the economy argument and ever since that happened, that appointment happened, it's gone the other way on the economy. he's been losing that argument. what do you think of that? was paul ryan with hindsight the wrong choice? >> hindsight is 20/20. we can look back on it and see all the reasons why it didn't work. you can see what they were trying to do, they were trying to tap into the tea party enthusiasm on the far right and if you could energize that base and get them excited, maybe that could be -- propel his candidacy forward. the other thing was they actually thought they could have some sort of big idea conversation, bu

's game. here to talk strategy is ryan lizza washington correspondent for the new yorker. nice to have you with us. >> nice to see you. >> to make sense of this. we've seen them trying to lowering the expectations. what can we expect? >> that's the sort of game. you talk about how your opponent is an incredible debater and you don't know anything. you can barely stand on the stage. so much of the game is after the debate is over. these things are would n in the spin room and in the media. not actually on the floor. >> let's start with romney, though. if we could start with romney. what can we expect there? >> couple things. romney needs to do three things. he needs to talk about specifics, which has been one of the things voters has been asking for and the campaign hasn't laid out what he's going to do. the second thing he needs to o do is favorability. unusual circumstance. he went into september as the only candidate in the last seven elections to have more voters say they have an unfavorable view of him than favorable. that's very unusual. that means all the negative ads that obama ran

't like paul ryan. so you look at all the recent polls, you have four of them. you have reuters, gallup, bloomberg and fox show the president leading. which doesn't mitt romney embrace these polls and acknowledge them? say, this is how it is right now. we're going to change them? >> i think internally they probably are doing a lot of that and trying to figure out how they can shift the narrative, but i think that article is exactly right. yes, mitt romney has been a poor candidate. yes, his comments about the 47% have been truly devastating to this race. i think his problems go way back. they do go to a self-delusion the gop has about the president. that he's awful and a toaster oven could beat him in an election. it's not true. the american people like the president. mitt romney was forced to move so far to the right in the gop primary it's hard to come back to a sensible, mainstream view and his embrace of paul ryan on the ticket just made that that much harder. >> if you're in the wilderness for years and you're not winning and we have 8% unemployment and we should win this thing and

of money. vice president -- vice- presidential candidate paul ryan has a plan to turn it into a voucher type program. i guess i'd like to hear specifically each of your vigs for the future of medicare. >> well, thank you for that question, lisa. i've already mentioned the fact that i got to see the difference that medicare makes in people's lives at a much earlier age than most do because i was raised by my grandparents. and my grandmother was on medicare by the time i was in my late teens. this is something that i regard as more than a program but a promise an one that we must keep. my opponent supports a plan to end medicare as we know it, to instead give seniors vouchers that outside, nonpartisan analysts have said will encrease out of pocket expenses for seniors over the first decade up to $6,000. and i know very few wisconsin seniors who can afford that sort of burden. we need to continue what we did in the affordable care act that extended medicare's solvency by nearly a decade. >> governor thompson. >> it's amazing to me that she has the audacity to say i did this, i'm not even i
